1 BACKGROUND & AIMS: In esophageal circular muscle, acetylcholine activates phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipases C and D and phospholipase A2, producing diacylglycerol and arachidonic acid, which cause contraction by interacting synergistically to activate protein kinase C.
