1 The present study indicates that free radicals and resultantly formed lipid peroxide levels are higher in patients with SLE than those in normal persons, probably contributing to the production of autoantibodies, nephritis, and vasculitis of other organs, and that excessively generated free radicals may play an important role in the pathogenesis of SLE, which is possibly due to diminished SOD activity.
